Sr. Software Engineer – BPM Developer

The Senior Software Engineer - Camunda BPM & Workflow Automation is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting business process automation solutions that modernize and streamline Workplace Investing operations. This role combines deep expertise in workflow orchestration, business process modeling, and software engineering to deliver scalable, cloud-ready solutions that drive operational efficiency and digital transformation.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer with strong Camunda and Java development experience who enjoys solving complex business problems through automation. You will work closely with business partners, product owners, architects, and fellow engineers to design and implement workflow solutions that simplify operations, improve customer experiences, and reduce operational risk.

The Team

The WI Automation & Workflow Solutions team is a group of software engineers and BPM specialists focused on transforming Workplace Investing operations through modern workflow and automation technologies.

Our team is responsible for:

  • Building cloud-native workflow and automation solutions that replace legacy platforms.
  • Designing and implementing enterprise business processes using Camunda.
  • Modernizing and optimizing operational workflows to improve efficiency, scalability, and resiliency.
  • Developing reusable services, APIs, and integrations that support enterprise automation initiatives.
  • Accelerating Fidelity's digital transformation by enabling streamlined, end-to-end business processes.

Key Responsibilities (The Value You Deliver)

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support workflow automation solutions using Camunda and Java-based technologies.
  • Create and maintain BPMN workflows, process orchestrations, business rules, and workflow integrations.
  • Partner with business analysts, product owners, and operations teams to analyze business processes and translate requirements into scalable automation solutions.
  • Develop REST APIs, microservices, and backend services that integrate with enterprise applications and workflow platforms.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Troubleshoot application and workflow issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Collaborate with architects and engineering teams to design scalable, secure, and maintainable workflow applications.
  • Contribute to the modernization of operational systems through cloud-native design patterns and engineering best practices.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily huddles, and retrospectives.
  • Promote engineering excellence through code reviews, automated testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Skills & Expertise

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of software development experience using Java and Spring Boot.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and developing workflow solutions using Camunda.
  • Strong understanding of BPMN 2.0, workflow orchestration, process lifecycle management, and business process automation principles.
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating enterprise applications
  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, software design patterns, and software engineering best practices.
  • Experience using Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Camunda 7 and cloud-native workflow architectures.
  • Experience developing Java Delegates, External Tasks, Execution Listeners, and process integrations within Camunda.
  • Experience developing event-driven solutions using messaging platforms such as Kafka.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized deployments
  • Experience with Form.io or similar workflow-driven user interface frameworks
  • Experience in workflow migration, process modernization, or legacy platform replacement initiatives.
  • Experience within financial services, retirement services, or operational processing environments.
  • Camunda certification or equivalent BPM platform certification.
